About QR Code Generator

Create a QR code for everyday sharing

QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode developed in Japan in 1994 by DENSO WAVE. This tool generates QR images locally in your browser for text, web links, email drafts, phone numbers, Wi-Fi settings and vCard 3.0 contacts.

Choose a content type and enter your details. For example, use https://example.com/events for an event page, or Hello, world! for plain text. The image updates automatically. Open Customize to change its size, colors, quiet zone and error correction level, then download a PNG or SVG.

PNG is useful for documents and everyday sharing. SVG keeps the modules sharp when scaled. Preserve the surrounding blank area and test the final image on the intended screen or printed material.

Content types and compatibility

  • Text and URL: plain text is stored as entered. URL mode accepts HTTP and HTTPS, and adds HTTPS to a host entered without a scheme. It does not check whether the destination exists or is trustworthy.
  • Email: a recipient such as alex@example.com, an optional subject such as “Event enquiry”, and an optional message form a mailto link. A compatible email app can open a draft; scanning does not send it.
  • Phone: use a country code when sharing internationally, for example +1 202-555-0142. The tool accepts 6–15 digits with an optional leading + and common separators. It does not verify that a number is assigned or reachable.
  • Wi-Fi: enter the exact network name and password, then match the network's security type: WPA, WEP or None. For example, a fictional network might be called Example Guest. These choices describe connection data; they do not change the router's security. Enterprise authentication and hidden-network settings are not supported.
  • Contact: enter a family name, a given name, or both, with optional phone, email and organization. For Alex Taylor, the English tool writes the display name as “Alex Taylor” while preserving separate family and given name fields in vCard 3.0.

The QR symbol format is shared internationally. What happens after scanning depends on the reader, operating system and installed apps. Contact import and Wi-Fi setup may require confirmation or may not be supported. Test non-ASCII text and the intended action on the devices your audience uses.

QR codes can link to survey pages or share contact details. This tool does not issue secure event tickets, verify identity or track whether a ticket has already been used; those tasks require a separate system.

Choosing size and error correction

Four error correction levels are available: L, M, Q and H. DENSO WAVE gives approximate codeword recovery figures of 7%, 15%, 25% and 30%, respectively. M is a practical starting point for everyday use.

These figures concern codewords, not the percentage of the picture that can be covered or removed. Damage to detection patterns, printing quality and the reader also matter. They are not a guarantee that a logo or a damaged QR code will scan.

More content or stronger error correction may require a denser symbol. Choose among 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 800 pixels. If the image is too small, the tool tells you the minimum required size. Keep a quiet zone of at least four modules and a dark foreground on a light background. The contrast check is a helpful guard, not a scanning guarantee.

The displayed character and UTF-8 byte counts refer to the formatted payload. They are not the number of encoded QR codewords: numeric, alphanumeric, Kanji and byte encoding can use different amounts of space. The input guard is 7,089 UTF-16 code units; actual capacity is usually lower and depends on the content and error correction level. Shorten the content if it does not fit.

Privacy and static QR codes

Your payload is processed in the browser and is not uploaded for QR generation. The page can still make normal requests for assets, usage measurement or advertising. On a shared device, use Clear all when finished.

A QR code is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone with access to a Wi-Fi QR image can read its password. Share images containing credentials or personal details only with the intended recipients.

These are static QR codes: the encoded content cannot be edited after an image is distributed. A URL's destination page may change independently, but the URL inside the QR code remains the same.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Why will my QR code not scan?
Check the quiet zone, contrast and image size. Use at least the minimum size shown by the tool, avoid stretching or cropping the image, and test the final screen or print with the intended devices. Higher error correction may also need a larger image.
Q. Can I change the colors?
Yes. Use a dark foreground on a light background. The contrast guard helps avoid poor combinations, but real scanning also depends on printing, lighting and the reader.
Q. Will a Wi-Fi QR code connect every phone automatically?
No. Compatible readers can offer Wi-Fi setup after scanning, but support and confirmation steps vary. Match the security type and enter the exact network name and password. The QR image itself reveals the connection details to anyone who can scan it.
Q. Are my inputs sent to a server?
The tool generates QR codes in your browser without uploading the payload for generation. This does not mean the entire webpage is offline: normal asset, analytics or advertising requests may still occur. Use Clear all on shared devices.
Q. Can I change the content of a downloaded QR code?
No. These static images contain the payload chosen when they were generated. Generate a new image to change that content. A linked website can change separately without changing the URL in the QR code.
Q. Does scanning a contact QR code save it immediately?
Not necessarily. A compatible reader may offer to import a vCard 3.0 contact, but supported fields and confirmation steps vary by app and device. Test the fields you need before printing or distributing the image.
